The Project

WHAT IS ROOTS?

ROOTS is a project developed with the support of the European Programme, “Prevention and fight against crime 2007.” It will run for two years (2009 – 2010) and aims to analyse new methods and approaches to protect women who are the victims of trafficking through effective interventions.

WHAT IS THE OBJECTIVE OF ROOTS?

The aim of Roots is to contribute to improving the fight against the trafficking of human beings through a deep understanding of the phenomenon of forced prostitution, laying special emphasis on the needs of victims.

THE AIMS OF THE PROJECT IS TO:

  • promote exchange among experts in order to address the various legal aspects connected with the voluntary return of victims to their country of origin;
  • draw up a voluntary repatriation programme including various actions, as: support in processing the administrative and legal paperwork needed for the return home, training and retraining courses, careers counselling;
  • dissemination of the results at European level in order to encourage similar schemes to the ones proposed by the Roots project.

IN WHAT WAY?

Roots seeks to create a network of non profit organizations, SMEs and public institutions to strengthen the ability to fight the phenomenon of trafficking, both in Italy and in the countries of origin, by increasing opportunities for the social and professional reintegration of victims.

In this process, the project plans to involve the world of crafts, trades and industry in order to study and develop effective methods of providing victims with professional training and work placement. Accordingly the economic world could be an important agent of change in synergy with the non profit and institutional world.
